50. Here’s how and when to tip.
First of all, almost everyone knows that they should tip a waiter or waitress, but not everyone does it. However, if you can’t afford to tip a waitress the proper amount, then you can’t afford to eat dinner. If the waitress gives good service, 15 percent is the standard tip you should leave. That goes up to 18 percent if it’s a large group.
But what if you don’t get good service? What if the food is late? What if you’re parched because your waitress never fills your glass? What if your waiter is a jerk? You will hear varying opinions on this, but if you don’t get good service, then your waitress doesn’t deserve a good tip. If the service is flat-out terrible, I don’t tip at all because that’s the proper way to let waiters and waitresses know they’re not doing a good job. You don’t ever yell at anyone handling your food unless you enjoy having gross foreign substances inserted into your dinner. You don’t write snarky notes on the receipt that give them the opportunity to make you appear to be the bad guy. Just leave them the tip they deserve and everything else will take care of itself.
Now here’s where it can get confusing: Waiters and waitresses aren’t the only people who get tips.
For cabbies? You want to hit 15 percent of the fare. The pizza guy or anyone else who delivers food to you? 15 percent. Your hairstylist or barber? 15 percent. The lady who does your manicure or pedicure? 15 percent. A massage therapist? 15 percent.
Things get a little cheaper at hotels. If you’re talking about a doorman who brings your bag up to your room, a hotel employee who brings something to you, a washroom attendant, coatroom attendant, or someone who parks your car, that’s $1 to $2.
When you get beyond that, things can get a little sketchy. I’ve had a girl at Subway ask for a tip after she made my sandwich. She looked so fantastic in the short shorts she was wearing, I gave it to her. The people who groomed my dog? They asked for a tip. Once, when I was young and worked for a rental car company, I helped a customer with his bags and, even though I didn’t expect a tip, I felt like a million bucks when he gave me $20.
At the end of the day, you are seldom going to feel bad about being a generous tipper, but you may be embarrassed if you don’t tip someone what they deserve. Think about that before you pull out your wallet and leave a tip.
